ASIA (Asia.fr) is a contemplative section of Éloge du Monde in which Michel Serres turns toward Asia as both a geographical reality and a philosophical horizon. Rather than presenting Asia as an exotic “other,” Serres approaches it as a source of alternative ways of thinking—marked by continuity, balance, and attention to relations rather than domination.
Through this lens, Asia represents modes of knowledge that value harmony with the world, cyclical time, and indirect action. Asia.fr also reflects on translation and mediation: how ideas travel, transform, and resist being fully captured by Western categories. Serres uses Asia to question the limits of European rationalism and to invite a more plural, attentive, and respectful engagement with the world’s many intellectual traditions.
